Rate deduction
I just got a “Rate Reduction Notice” from The New Yorker magazine. Evidently, as a “preferred subscriber,” I am entitled to “specially reduced rates” when I extend my subscription now. In this case, my special rate reduction would put me at $64.99 for the year — an incredible savings of $216.54 off the cover price!
My first question when I got this was: Why am I a preferred subscriber — are there subscribers who are unpreferred, and why am I better than they?
My other questions, of course, were: when is my subscription up, and what did I pay last time?
Here’s when my subscription lapses: August of next year. And here’s what I paid last time: $39.95.
Whether or not it pays to read The New Yorker, it certainly pays to read their promos carefully.

Must b nice being a “prefered subscriber” Lee. When Itried to renew my subscription they refused! Said they didn’t want me in their files, it scared away the decent folk….

Well I wrote a comment and this site erased it for me. Grrrr. Try again.
The New Yorker is a wonderful magazine. Presumably they’re having financial problems. Who isn’t? So their board met and made a decision to go the sleazy route and try to con people out of their money. You’re “preferred”. Save money. Do it now. Cluck like a chicken.
My own recent horrid experiences with 3 US corporations will be described in my blog soon.
We are no longer citizens, but rather consumers, and valued as that alone. Fight the power? Is that even possible anymore? More likely, buy the power.
All hail the almighty dollar. Cluck, cluck, cluck.

Probably some computer just spit out that offer. I picked up last week’s issue to read the story by Jonathan Letham. The inserted subscription cards offer me 25 or 50 issues at a buck apiece. I may just break down and do it. Plus, I just renewed my sub to Mad.

Uncle Rich: No, it’s definitely part of their circulation campaign. They also emailed me a followup warning me that the offer was about to expire.
