Bukowski unbound

Last night, my friend Jonathan Josephson’s theatre troupe descended unannounced on Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood to perform several poems by Charles Bukowski. You can watch the performance below — and be sure to note the reactions of diners seated in and around the playing area. I understand their constrained response:  I’m not sure I’d want to be eating Barney’s signature chili dog while being accosted by an actor reciting “My Underwear Has Shit Stains Too.”

Well, the bigots of old West Hollywood, now long dead, have something new to spin in their graves about. Barney’s is infamous for having only recently removed a sign near the door indicating “No Fags Allowed” but dually – or is it tri-ally – to have the storied enough history of Jim Morrison relieving himself at the bar. So, the ‘shit stains too’ poem by our beloved barfly, Mr. Bukowski, is just icing on an already heavily laden cake – if you will. This video is fun, patrons seem to be apprehensively wondering if this is for real, or is it just pedestrian crud, destined the same night to wind up on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
