What the welcome mat outside every door really says: “Please wipe your feet before entering.”
That’s what we call subtext.
I don’t know how that applies here, but I’m thinking about it.

I shudder to think what’s inside that jacket pocket.

What the Welcome mat means is that our good wishes are delivered with conditions attached. You’re always welcome at our house… if you wipe your feet.
“Hey, Lee, I’m happy you could come. And I’ll stay happy with you if you don’t abuse my other guests.”
It’s all symbolical.
