The other directors
The other directors who interest me, by the way, are:
and the only living and working director on the list other than Werner Herzog:
- Paul Schrader (“American Gigolo,” “The Comfort of Strangers,” “Affliction” and “Auto Focus” put Schrader at the pinnacle of American dramatic film. Scorsese who?)
You may note that each of them is the writer of their films as well.

I often select movies by their directors. Probably the first I was charmed by was Federico Fellini. As a teenager I took a bus from my home in South Jersey to Philadelphia to see his “Juliet of the Spirits” and have yet to recover.
More recently I’ve enjoyed the work of Joel Coen, starting with “Blood Simple”. Along with his brother Ethan he has been responsible for “Miller’s Crossing”, “The Hudsucker Proxy” and more.
Those are just two favorite directors from my long list.

As far as older directors go, I’ve always felt Mchael Curtiz was underrated because his virtues were self-effacing. You don’t find thematic consistency in is films, but you have only to watch the high points of DODGE CITY, DR. X or THE UNSUSPECTED to see a true stylist at work.
