The big news from back home

236-moths_001.jpg

So it appears that gypsy moths are once again going to devastate the clan homestead in southern New Jersey. And somehow the state and the township couldn’t work out in time who might pay to eliminate this infestation, until it was too late.

It further appears that this is the big news from my home town paper, the one I served as a classified ad salesperson (in high school) and editor (after college).

Twenty years after I moved across the country, some things still haven’t changed.

Another thing that hasn’t changed is the possibility of forest fires. There was another near the Warren Grove Firing Range this past week. It was started when a flare from a fighter plane did not extinguish before reaching the ground.

The firing range is not far from the site of many Cabin Weekends in a section of the Jersey Pine Barrens new the bustling town of New Gretna (it’s so big it has one traffic light). Quite a few times as we drove back to the Cabin ground attack planes would use our vehicles as target practice, just lining us up for a shot, not using live ammo.

Looking back on the many times we were at the Cabin during the summer when the pines were dry we were very luck that a forest fire did not come to terrorize us.

Uh… Paul? I don’t recall any “ground attack planes” using our vehicles as target practice. I think that was just you. For one thing, we drove faster.

I distinctly remember driving my father’s green Plymouth Volare station wagon back to the Cabin and having an A10 ground attack plane fly low over the road from behind the car.

I guess my questions are this:

    1. Do you still see it there?
    2. Are you yourself armed?
