It’s back — and had better be better than before
Schlitz beer is returning, and I have one bit of advice for its brewers: Make it better.
As the story linked above notes, Schlitz was pretty bad, at least in the incarnation I remember. It tasted so bad and was so cheap to buy, that my father drank it. That’s how bad it was. The only beer I remember him preferring was Black Label, and that’s because it was even cheaper and even worse. Schlitz tasted like the can it came in, with rust added; Black Label tasted like the can and whatever died inside it.
I have no intention of switching from my occasional Newcastle, which I fully switched to when Anheuser-Busch bought out Rolling Rock and screwed up its formula — even while nervily retaining the slogan “Same as it ever was.” But if or when I run into Schlitz someplace I’m going to try one, just to see if I can keep it down.

I’ve never had Schlitz although my perception of it was yeah, it’s probably pretty rank. I wonder how it compares to PBR? I still see that selling for a buck or two a bottle in the hipster hangouts in our neighborhood but I can’t quite convince myself to buy one… My feeling: at some point I just decided that several bottles of cheap beer-like-substance can’t compare to one really tasty draft beer.

After several years of drinking some of the more expensive brews, I thought it would be fun to buy a 6-pack of Bud again. You know, to go with hot dogs, macaroni salad, and chips. After tasting the Bud, I’m switching straight back to the better stuff. I can’t wait for Fall to arrive so I can buy some Pumpkin Ale.

Wow, this is some powerful blog. I said I wanted Pumpkin Ale and today it appeared in the stores. Proof that the internet loves us and wants us to be happy.

Don’t drink too much. You don’t want to be barfing pumpkin.
(Note to others: That’s a Zappa pun.)
