In defense
Mark Evanier applies common sense to defending Jay Leno. I’m one of those who don’t find Leno funny, but I don’t understand this backlash against him either. It’s not like he’s denying millions of people health insurance or something.

Back in the mid 1980’s I was working at the Sands in Atlantic City and Jay Leno was appearing there. He was scheduled for several shows over a few months time. His parents came down from Boston to see him and stayed at the hotel. They had a good time and Jay was so happy with how his parents were treated he did a special show for the property’s employees. He tailored his show to the property and made use of several acronyms for the departments in the building. I don’t remember the exact jokes he made, but he was funny.
At a later show I was running the box office and Jay and his manager came in. The box office was just in front of the hotel elevators. Jay was speaking with customers and he saw his name and show info across a scrolling message board and asked how ticket sales were. He was very pleasant to speak with and interacted well with the customers.
I have not seen his Tonight Show or the Jay Leno Show or Conan’s Tonight Show so I can’t comment on either of them being funny or not.
