Free comics tomorrow

Just like Christmas, Free Comic Book Day is a day that the kid inside us wishes came every day.

Click here to locate your nearest participating comics shop — and the list of free comics. And then do what I’m going to do:  Round up some kids — actual kids — and take them to a comics shop. Last year was a highly memorable occasion:  My daughter got to meet “Supergirl” and “Wonder Woman,” and got a sketch from a professional artist. That sketch still hangs in her room, and the memory of “Supergirl” and “Wonder Woman” lingers in my memory.

After work I visited a local comic shop, Jester’s Playhouse, for the occasion. When I went in the owner said hello and called me over to the counter. He had saved me a copy of the free Simpsons comic because he knew I would enjoy it and didn’t want them to run out before I got there. How thoughtful was that? Plus, they had a great sale on back issues and I picked up 10 funnybooks for two bucks. Yay.

Both of my kids picked that Simpsons comic, which I also read and which made me laugh out loud. I enjoyed the Superman title (evidently, Superman is now going into war against all the newly superpowered and enlarged Kandor bottle people), but no, I’m not going to buy it. I also liked the Iron Man / Thor title, which reminded me of what’s possible when you decide to do a single-issue contained story (as opposed to 17-issue epics); it was lots of fun and ended with a nice twist. The Dr. Solar / Magnus title was very badly written (by Jim Shooter), and the Oni Press title hurt my eyes and my brain. Look for some of these to be appearing in your mailbox some day (perhaps soon).

Maybe I shouldn’t hace asked for ACTION #1
