Every amateur a pro

DC Comics is launching Zuda, an outlet for fan-created web-based comic strips. A peer judging process results in a one-year contract.

They’ll also be promoting the heck out of it at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

Terence, are you listening?

(And maybe you could please school my Uncle Rich. Forty years later, this is his big opportunity.)

Another opportunity for animators: Last week, Sony relaunched its video-sharing site, renaming it CRACKLE. One channel called WET PAINT is devoted to animation. Sony will sponsor quarterly contests on it to find the best original animation. The winner gets a cash prize, chance to pitch to Sony executives, chance to have an animated short released in theatres – making it eligible for Academy Award – and will be invited to Siggraph. They may even get the pot at the end of the rainbow, for all I know!

There will also be other quarterly contests, such as one for video shorts on Crackle’s SHORTS channel and best stand-up comedian or impersonator on HIGH WIRE channel. Seems like a great populist way to crack into mass media.

Uncle Rich here. I did a strip called Too Funny for Words. Did you run that in your zine, LAGB? It was so good that I did just the three panals and decided there was no point in doing further installments. You can’t go beyond perfection.
