Difference of opinion continues
What did the Los Angeles Film Critics Association name the Best Picture of the year? You guessed right: “The Descendants.” (Had there been no other movies released this year, I still wouldn’t have voted for it.)
By the way, the association also placed a lot of praise on “Tree of Life.” Those friends I trust didn’t like that one either.
I just checked — and three of the association’s member critics are friends, and two more are former students of mine.

I’m actually here at Lee’s blog today because of the attention being given to The Descendants, on which we share an equally bleak (or blech!) opinion, and I was going to comment at his original blog about the movie. If we’d seen it together, or even at the same cinema, I might have thought we’d seen the wrong movie, or they’d left a reel out. Instead, I think those who are heaping praise are missing a reel (metaphorically). I don’t see many first run films, but Our Idiot Brother, starring Paul Rudd, was sweet and entertaining and much better than The Descendants. Even though I really like George Clooney and the earlier films of Alexander Payne. That deserves all this praise more than The D’s.
