A great Christmas story

Christopher Durang be damned, this is a great Christmas story. (And so, in a way, is his dada Christmas, in which he and his mother reinvent the holiday with abandon.) This is from Mark Evanier’s blog, in which he relates (almost) meeting Mel Torme and instigating a very personal rendition of “The Christmas Song.” Here’s the link.

That is indeed a great story. Earlier this year one of my postal customers insisted on loaning me Mel Torme’s autobiography, “It Wasn’t All Velvet.” I read it happily, as Mel was a good writer and had endless stories to tell, some of which don’t show him at his best, but all of which are enjoyable.
We live near Atlantic City and my family — except for me — have had encounters with Mel, who was a movie lover. My wife Ruth took our kids, Tara and Justin, to see “Tron” during its original run. It was a hot afternoon in South Jersey. They were the only ones in the auditorium — except for Mr. Mel Torme.
Years later, when my daughter worked at the nearby Tilton theater, at the snack bar, she got to butter Mel’s popcorn. How’s that for a celebrity face-to-face?
