Or, just send more to AIG

(Thanks to Rich Roesberg for sending this in.)

This was an article from the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper on Sunday. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on “How Would You Fix the Economy?” I thought this was the BEST idea….. I think this guy nailed it…

Dear Mr. President,

Patriotic retirement: There’s about 40 million people over 50 in the work force, pay them $1 million apiece severance with the following stipulations:

  1. They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings – Unemployment fixed.
  2. They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered – Auto Industry fixed.
  3. They either buy a house/pay off their mortgage – Housing Crisis fixed.

Can’t get any easier than that!”

Yes, I forwarded that to several people and just about all of them responded. I guess it hit a nerve.

  2. Dan Says:

Years ago, Walt Kelley had a plan that was picked up on by the Bush administration: Print money on food, so rich people won’t starve.

  3. Lee Wochner Says:

Hey, a Walt Kelly reference! You are a man of taste.

[…] other day I posted an email that’s been making the rounds that endorses giving all the Federal bailout money to, well, us […]

As a follow up to this, there’s an excellent point at the end of this snopes.com post that I just read (one of the many that I bookmark and read daily, present blog included): http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/fixeconomy.asp Barbara Michelson points out that the point of St. Petersburg Times article may be that Americans are arithmetically-challenged (myself included): 40 million x 40 million is 40 TRILLION, not 40 billion….

  6. Barry Says:

Sorry, I just proved how arithmetically challenged I am: the actual math is 40 million x 1 million = 40 trillion; 40 millon x 40 million = 16 trillion. Just call me Mr. SATs

  7. Barry Says:

One last stab: 40 million x 40 million = 1.6 x 10 to the 13th which would be 1,600 trillion… and I don’t even know what the number is! A gazillion? A Brazilian? I give up! How do I delete my comments?
